# ChatGPT Skills Are Here: What They Are, Who Gets Them, and How to Enable Them at Work

OpenAI rolled out **Skills** for workplace ChatGPT accounts as part of the broader ChatGPT Work launch on July 9, 2026. They're now generally available on Business, Enterprise, Healthcare, and Edu plans — with an important activation step your admin controls.

## What a Skill actually is

A ChatGPT Skill is a **reusable, shareable template** that tells ChatGPT how to execute a specific task. It can contain:

- **Instructions**: Step-by-step guidance on how to approach the task, what format to use, what tone to take
- **Examples**: Sample inputs and outputs that train the pattern
- **Code**: Actual executable code for steps where consistency matters (formatting a table a specific way, running a calculation)

Once a Skill is installed in your workspace, ChatGPT applies it whenever the task comes up — without you having to explain "use bullet points, keep it under 150 words, and end with a next-steps section" every single time.

A concrete example: a recruiting coordinator who writes 20 interview feedback summaries a week could build a Skill with the exact template the team uses — rating format, question categories, recommended language — and install it once. After that, every summary follows the same structure, regardless of who wrote the draft or how they prompted ChatGPT.

## Who can use Skills — and the catch

Skills are available on **ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Healthcare, and Edu** plans. Free, Plus, and Pro accounts are not included in the current rollout.

The second catch: even on an eligible plan, Skills are **off by default** for Enterprise and Edu workspaces. A workspace admin has to enable them through the **Permissions & Roles** settings in the admin dashboard before anyone in the organization can see or use them.

Two things to know about the timeline:
- **Before July 23, 2026**: Skills only appear after an admin manually enables them.
- **Starting July 23, 2026**: OpenAI will turn Skills on by default for all Enterprise workspaces that haven't opted out.

## Where to find Skills in ChatGPT

Once enabled, Skills live in the ChatGPT sidebar under **Plugins → Skills tab**. From there you can:

1. Browse Skills that have been shared with your workspace
2. Create a new Skill from scratch using ChatGPT's built-in creator (describe what you want in plain language; ChatGPT builds the template)
3. Edit an existing Skill manually
4. Upload a Skill file if you've built one externally

## Five things professionals are using Skills for

According to OpenAI's documentation and the July 2026 rollout, Skills are being used for:

1. **Meeting notes**: A Skill that extracts decisions, owners, and deadlines from a transcript in a specific format the whole team recognizes
2. **Client proposals**: A template that pulls in your firm's structure, standard sections, and pricing language without rewriting from scratch
3. **Email management**: A Skill for drafting a specific type of email — client follow-up, internal escalation, contract renewal — in the right tone with required disclaimers
4. **Social content**: A brand-voice Skill that generates posts with the right hashtags, character count, and call-to-action format
5. **Presentation structure**: Alongside the ChatGPT Work integration with Microsoft PowerPoint, Skills can supply the slide structure and narrative framework so your decks start from a consistent baseline

## Sharing Skills with your team

Skills aren't just personal — they're shareable. Workspace admins can configure who can do what:

- **Enable Skills** — allow members to create and use Skills
- **Share Skills** — allow members to share Skills with specific people, groups, or the whole workspace
- **Publish to workspace** — allow a Skill to be available org-wide
- **Install for others** — admins can push a Skill to team members so it's there automatically

This last permission is the practical unlock for consistency across a team. If your organization has a standard format for client deliverables, an admin can publish that format as a Skill and install it for every relevant member — without anyone having to find and install it themselves.

## The device limitation you need to know

This is the most important practical caveat: **Skills don't sync across devices**. If you set up a Skill in ChatGPT on the web, it won't automatically appear in the macOS or Windows desktop app, or on mobile. You'll need to install it in each place you want to use it.

For most professionals, this means choosing one primary surface for Skill-heavy work, or setting aside a few minutes to install the same Skills in two places. It's a papercut in an otherwise useful feature, and worth flagging if you frequently switch between desktop and web.

## If you're on Plus: the workaround

Plus plan users aren't in the Skills rollout. The nearest workaround: **ChatGPT Projects** (available on all paid plans, including Plus). A Project gives ChatGPT persistent custom instructions for an ongoing topic. You can paste the same detailed instructions a Skill would contain into a Project's instructions field — you get most of the consistency benefit, without the Skill's shareability or installability.

It's not identical — you can't publish it to your team or have an admin install it — but for individual use, Projects get most of the way there.

## What this means for your work

ChatGPT Skills is OpenAI's answer to one of the most common workplace AI frustrations: "it does this right when I explain exactly what I want, but I have to explain it every single time." Skills solve that — for the tasks you do repeatedly, you set the standard once.

The July 23 default-on date for Enterprise is significant: it means most Enterprise workspaces will gain access without anyone having to actively request it. If you're on Business, the admin step is the one thing standing between you and the feature now.
