# Claude Chat vs Cowork vs Claude Code After the 'One Claude' Merge (2026)
> On September 16, 2026 Anthropic started merging Claude chat and Cowork into one Claude. Some accounts still show separate Chat and Cowork options, some don't. Here's how to tell which you have, what each surface is for either way, and where Claude Code and Claude in Chrome fit.

---> **Updated September 22, 2026.** Anthropic began merging Claude chat and Cowork into one Claude on September 16. This guide now covers both states: accounts that still see separate "Chat" and "Cowork" options, and accounts on the merged Claude. Background on the change is in [What Is Claude Docs, and What Happened to Cowork?](/blog/what-is-claude-docs-cowork-merged-2026).

> **TL;DR.** Look at your message box. If it still shows **"Chat" and "Cowork"** options, you're on the old split: chat for questions, Cowork for multi-step jobs across your files. If those options are gone, you're on the **merged Claude**: describe the job and Claude picks the tools. Either way, **Claude Code** is still the tool for software, and **Claude in Chrome** still acts inside websites you're signed into. Free covers chat plus connectors, memory, skills, and up to 5 projects; multi-step tasks, Docs and Slides, Claude Code, Chrome, and the Office add-ins need a paid plan.

For most of 2026, the question on professional AI forums was "what can Cowork do that chat can't?" As of mid-September the question is changing to "where did Cowork go?"

The short answer is that it didn't go anywhere. It stopped being a separate mode. Anthropic's help center says, of the new experience, that "What you could previously only do in Claude Cowork is available from any conversation." The rollout is gradual, though, so right now two people on the same plan can see two different versions of Claude. This guide covers both.

## Which Claude do you have right now?

Anthropic gives a one-line test: "If you're on a Pro or Max plan and your message box still shows 'Chat' and 'Cowork' options, you don't have it yet."

| What you see | What it means | Who is here |
|---|---|---|
| Separate **Chat** and **Cowork** options | The old split. Pick the mode before you start. | Anyone not yet migrated: Team, Free, most Enterprise, and some Pro and Max accounts |
| **No mode choice**, one message box | The merged Claude. Claude decides which tools a request needs. | Pro and Max accounts the rollout has reached |

A few rollout facts, all from Anthropic's announcement and help center:

- It started **September 16, 2026** with **Pro and Max** on web, desktop, and mobile, "over the coming weeks."
- "Team and Free plans will follow soon." No date has been given.
- **Enterprise** admins "will hear from us at least 30 days before anything changes."
- You don't need to do anything to get it. Once your account moves over, **you can't switch back** to separate modes.
- "Your chats, tasks, projects, and settings come with you."

## Claude chat vs Cowork (if you still see both)

If your account hasn't moved over yet, the old decision still applies, and it's simple.

**Chat is ask-and-answer.** You paste or upload something and get an answer or a draft back: drafting, summarising, analysis, thinking something through. It's the only surface on the Free plan, and for most everyday questions it's the right tool.

**Cowork is give-it-a-job.** You describe an outcome, and it works through the steps itself: reading a folder of files, pulling from connected apps like Google Drive, Gmail, Microsoft 365, or Slack, opening a browser when a step needs a website, and handing back finished files. It needs a paid plan.

The signal that you've outgrown chat is when you're doing the tool's job for it: pasting documents in one at a time, copying a section out, pasting the reply back. That's a Cowork task.

One practical difference trips people up. **Plugins run in Cowork and Claude Code, not in chat.** Anthropic's plugin docs say so directly: "Plugins are available in Cowork and Code. They aren't used in Chat." If you installed a plugin and nothing happens in chat, that's why.

## What changes when Cowork becomes "just Claude"

On the merged Claude there's no mode to pick. A quick question still gets a quick answer, and a request like "go through these five interview notes and pull out the top themes, with a quote for each" becomes a multi-step task in the same conversation.

What carries over, per Anthropic's help center:

- **Existing Cowork tasks, projects, connectors, skills, artifacts, and files.** Old Cowork tasks "open as they did before, so you can continue them."
- **One conversation list.** Quick questions and longer tasks now sit together in Recents.
- **Projects work in every conversation**, not just in one mode.
- **The Cowork global instructions setting** moves into Instructions for Claude, under Settings → General. Check that yours still say what you want.

What's in a new place or not there yet:

- **No web search toggle.** Claude searches when it helps.
- **Research** is under `/deep-research` or the **+** menu.
- **Current limitations** Anthropic lists: you can't branch a conversation from an earlier point, incognito chats open in the previous experience (so Claude can't create files or run code in them), and "Add from GitHub isn't supported" — the option for attaching a GitHub repository's files to a chat, not plugin marketplaces. Adding a GitHub-hosted plugin marketplace (Customize → Plugins → **Add marketplace**, with `owner/repo` or a GitHub URL) is documented as supported in Anthropic's [Install plugins](https://claude.com/docs/cowork/guide/plugins) guide.

Two things that didn't change:

1. **Local files still need Claude Desktop.** "Claude reaches your local files, the built-in browser, and computer use only while Claude Desktop is open." Cloud tasks keep running if you close your laptop, and scheduled tasks can run in the cloud.
2. **Claude still asks before it acts, by default.** A permission setting in the message box has two options: **Manual (default)**, where Claude asks before each action, and **Auto**, where it keeps working and runs automated safety checks before acting.

## New on paid plans: Claude Docs and Claude Slides

The merge shipped alongside two beta tools on paid plans.

- **Claude Docs** makes a living document you edit with Claude and, on Team and Enterprise, with invited colleagues at the same time. It exports to Word, PDF, Markdown, or Google Docs. It's available in beta on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, and not on Free.
- **Claude Slides** builds a presentation you can present from Claude or download as PowerPoint or PDF.

Docs is on by default for Pro, Max, and Team. On Enterprise it stays off until an owner turns it on under **Organization settings → Artifacts**. Anthropic lists current limits: no version history yet, charts don't update on their own, editing and sharing happen on web or desktop, and Docs isn't available yet for organizations using customer-managed encryption keys, zero data retention, or a HIPAA-ready configuration.

## Claude Cowork vs Claude Code

This is the most-searched version of the question, and the answer didn't change with the merge.

- **Cowork (now simply Claude)** works across documents, spreadsheets, email, calendars, and websites.
- **Claude Code** works inside a software project. It reads, edits, runs, and tests code across many files and shows you the diff. You reach it in the terminal, an IDE, or the **Code** tab, which "is where it was" after the merge.

If you don't write software, skip Claude Code. If you do, the difference is stark: chat can talk about your code, and Claude Code can change it and run the tests. It's included in every paid plan and draws from the same usage pool as the rest of Claude.

## Claude in Chrome: for work behind a login

Claude in Chrome reached general availability on **August 26, 2026**. It's included on **Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise**, and it runs only in **Google Chrome**, not in other Chromium browsers or on mobile.

It differs from Claude's built-in browser in whose session it uses. Chrome acts in *your* browser with *your* existing logins, so for a portal you're already signed into, it's often the only thing that can finish the job.

The rule of thumb:

- **The browsing is the job** (one portal, forms, pulling numbers) → **Claude in Chrome**.
- **Browsing is one step of a bigger job** that also touches your files and email → **Claude** (Cowork), which can open its own browser in Claude Desktop when it needs one.

## What each one costs

| Surface | Free | Pro ($20/mo, or $17/mo billed annually) and up |
|---|---|---|
| Chat | Yes | Yes |
| Multi-step tasks ("Hand off and schedule tasks") | No | Yes |
| Claude Docs, Slides, Design (beta) | No | Yes |
| Claude Code | No | Yes |
| Claude in Chrome | No | Yes |
| Claude for Microsoft 365 add-ins | No | Yes |

Max starts at $100 a month. Team is $20 per standard seat per month billed annually ($25 monthly). All prices are from [claude.com/pricing](https://claude.com/pricing) on September 22, 2026.

If you're choosing a plan rather than a surface, the [AI plan calculator](/tools/ai-plan-calculator) compares Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini, and [which Claude model to use](/tools/which-claude-model) handles the Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku choice.

## A caution that applies to all of them

The more a surface can act, the more ordinary review discipline matters. A wrong answer in chat costs you a re-prompt. A wrong action sends an email, moves a file, or submits a form.

Claude's Gmail and Drive write actions (send, reply, forward, share, move, trash) **ask for approval by default**. On Team and Enterprise, owners decide whether members may skip that. Two habits worth keeping:

1. **Start on Manual.** Keep approval on for a new workflow and watch the first few runs. Switch to Auto once you've seen it behave, not before.
2. **Review before it goes out.** Everything Claude drafts still needs the same pass as anything else. [Here's the six-minute version](/blog/how-to-review-an-ai-draft-before-you-send-it).

## The short answer

- **Still see Chat and Cowork?** Questions go to chat. Jobs across your files and apps go to Cowork.
- **On the merged Claude?** Just describe the job. Claude picks the tools.
- **Writing software?** Claude Code, either way.
- **Working inside a site you're logged into?** Claude in Chrome.

The [surface chooser](/tools/which-claude-surface) still treats Cowork as its own option, which matches what you'll see until the merge reaches your account. If you already have the merged Claude, read its "Cowork" answer as "ask Claude in a normal conversation."

For what non-engineers actually do with all this day to day, see [how to use Claude at work](/blog/how-to-use-claude-at-work-2026).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between Claude chat and Claude Cowork?

Chat answers a question or drafts something from what you give it. Cowork carries out a multi-step job across your files and connected apps and hands back finished files. Since September 16, 2026 Anthropic has been merging the two into one Claude, where you describe what you need and Claude decides which tools to use. If your message box still shows separate 'Chat' and 'Cowork' options, your account hasn't moved over yet and the old split still applies.

### Is Claude Cowork being discontinued?

The separate Cowork mode is going away, but what it does is not. In the merged Claude, 'everything Claude Cowork does is available from any conversation,' per Anthropic's help center. Existing Cowork tasks, projects, connectors, skills, artifacts, and files carry over. The rollout started with Pro and Max; more plans follow 'soon', and Enterprise admins get at least 30 days' notice before anything changes.

### What is the difference between Claude Cowork and Claude Code?

Cowork (now simply Claude) is for work across documents, spreadsheets, email, and websites. Claude Code is for software: it reads, edits, runs, and tests code in a real project from the terminal, an IDE, or the Code tab. The merge did not change Claude Code, and it is included in every paid plan. If you don't write software, you can ignore it.

### Is Claude Cowork available on the free plan?

Not today. Anthropic's pricing page lists 'Hand off and schedule tasks', Claude Code, Claude in Chrome, Claude for Microsoft 365, and Claude Docs, Slides, and Design on Pro and above, not on Free. Free still includes chat, memory, connectors, skills, file creation, and up to 5 projects. Anthropic says the merged experience is coming to Free 'soon' but hasn't said what Free users will get in it.

### Can Claude send emails on my behalf?

Yes. With the Gmail connector, Claude can send, reply to, and forward email, and with Google Drive it can share, move, or trash files. By default Claude asks for your approval before each of those actions. On Team and Enterprise plans, owners decide whether members can let those actions run without asking each time. Check that setting before you connect a work inbox.
