# ChatGPT Work vs Claude Cowork vs Copilot Cowork: Which to Choose (2026)

It now compares all three AI coworkers that professionals are choosing between: **ChatGPT Work**, **Claude** (Cowork, which Anthropic started merging into the main Claude app on September 16), and **Microsoft Copilot Cowork**. Every price and plan below was re-checked on the vendors' own pages today.

> **TL;DR.** Choose by **where your work already lives**. If it's in Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint and your company pays for Microsoft 365 Copilot, **Copilot Cowork** is the path of least resistance, but tasks are metered. If you're a solo professional or small firm and want a flat monthly price, reusable workflows, and your own files, choose **Claude**. If you already live in ChatGPT, want its 1,400+ plugins, or want OpenAI's newest model (GPT-6 Astra is in Work on Plus), choose **ChatGPT Work**. On a business plan, none of the three trains on your content by default.

A [post on r/ClaudeAI](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeAI/comments/1wbxu4x/chatgpt_work_vs_claude_cowork/) this month put the problem well. The poster had "been doing a ton of research" and still couldn't choose between ChatGPT Work and Claude Cowork: "I keep hearing that it mostly comes down to personal preference, almost like comparing Coke vs. Pepsi."

It's less of a taste test than that. All three do the same broad thing: you describe an outcome, and the agent plans the steps, pulls from your files and apps, and hands back finished work. The differences are where your files have to live, how you pay, and who controls the settings.

## What is ChatGPT Work?

ChatGPT Work is OpenAI's agent mode for getting whole tasks done inside ChatGPT. OpenAI describes it as something that "gathers context, plans the approach, and takes action across your tools, files, and desktop apps to create polished spreadsheets, docs, and slides."

What stands out on OpenAI's own page:

- **Reach.** "More than 1,400 plugins" pull context from the tools you already use. The desktop app has a built-in browser with multiple tabs.
- **Plan mode.** ChatGPT gathers context, asks questions, and shows a step-by-step plan you approve before the work starts.
- **Sites.** It can turn plans and data into shareable interactive pages such as dashboards, trackers, and prototypes.
- **Scheduled tasks** that run once or on a schedule, which you can check from your phone.
- **Office extensions.** ChatGPT's pricing page lists Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Google Sheets extensions among plan features.

**Model.** OpenAI's page says ChatGPT Work is "Powered by GPT-6." Per OpenAI's help center, "Plus plans include GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex," while the GPT-6 Pro option in regular chat is reserved for Pro, Business, and Enterprise. Work also offers GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna on Plus and above. Usage in Work and Codex is counted separately from chat.

## What is Claude Cowork, now that it's "just Claude"?

Claude Cowork was Anthropic's agent for non-programmers. On **September 16, 2026** Anthropic started merging it into the main Claude app, so you no longer pick a mode. Claude decides which tools a request needs. The rollout started with Pro and Max. Anthropic says "Team and Free plans will follow soon," and Enterprise admins get at least 30 days' notice. What stands out:

- **Your own computer.** In Claude Desktop you can give Claude a folder, and it reads, organizes, and creates files there. Tasks that use local files need the desktop app open. Cloud tasks and scheduled tasks keep running when your computer is off.
- **Connectors** to Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, Microsoft 365, Slack, and others. Gmail send, reply, and forward and Drive share, move, and trash all **ask for approval by default**.
- **Skills and plugins.** You can teach Claude a procedure once and reuse it, or install a plugin that bundles skills and connectors for your role. This is where Claude is most distinctive for professionals. See the free profession plugins below.
- **Claude Docs and Claude Slides** (beta, paid plans). Docs are living documents you edit with Claude and colleagues, exportable to Word, PDF, Markdown, or Google Docs. Slides present from Claude or download as PowerPoint or PDF.

## What is Copilot Cowork?

Copilot Cowork is Microsoft's agent inside Microsoft 365 Copilot. It became generally available worldwide on **June 16, 2026**. Microsoft describes it as running "complex, long-running, multi-tool tasks": "You define the work and Cowork runs it end-to-end and returns a completed result, not just a draft or a recommendation."

What stands out:

- **It sits on your Microsoft 365 data.** You attach work context (files, people, meetings) or cloud files from OneDrive, SharePoint, or Teams, and results open in OneDrive and PowerPoint online.
- **It runs where Microsoft users already are**: the browser at copilot.cloud.microsoft, Outlook, Teams, and the Copilot desktop (Windows, macOS) and mobile apps.
- **It asks before acting.** Before it sends an email, posts a Teams message, or schedules a meeting, it shows a preview and an approve button. You can choose "Always allow" for similar actions within one conversation.
- **Admin cost controls.** Admins set spending limits at tenant, group, and user level, and users see what each task costs in credits.

**Is it built on Claude?** This is the most repeated claim about Copilot Cowork, so here is exactly what Microsoft says. In March 2026 Microsoft wrote that it is "bringing the technology platform that powers Claude Cowork into Microsoft 365 Copilot," with "skills from Claude and Microsoft built in." Its general-availability post says: "At general availability, Copilot Cowork runs on Anthropic models, including Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 4.6. In Frontier, customers can use GPT 5.5." Anthropic acts as a Microsoft subprocessor, so Microsoft's Product Terms and Data Protection Addendum apply. It's still a Microsoft product with Microsoft's billing and admin model.

Microsoft has also renamed the product line. A Microsoft Learn note says "Microsoft 365 Copilot is now named Microsoft Copilot," so you'll see both names on its pages.

## Copilot Cowork vs Claude Cowork

This is the head-to-head most people search for, and the practical differences come down to four things.

1. **Where the work happens.** Copilot Cowork is strongest on content already in your Microsoft tenant: mail, meetings, Teams chats, SharePoint files. Claude works on your own computer's files and on whatever apps you connect, Microsoft 365 included.
2. **How you pay.** Claude is a flat subscription on Pro, Max, and Team, and Enterprise is a seat price plus usage at API rates. Copilot Cowork is a license plus metered tasks. Microsoft says its own testing found Copilot Cowork "on average was 30-40% cheaper" per prompt than Claude Cowork with its Microsoft 365 connector. That is Microsoft's internal analysis of 125 runs on Opus 4.8, comparing against Claude's public API rates rather than a flat Pro or Max subscription, so read it with that in mind.
3. **Who sets it up.** A solo professional can start Claude today with a credit card. Copilot Cowork needs a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, usage-based billing turned on by an admin, and, for the app-building skill, enrollment in Microsoft's Frontier program.
4. **Reusable workflows.** Both support skills and plugins now. Claude's plugin system is open to anyone: you can add a marketplace or upload a plugin file yourself. That's how this site's free profession plugins install.

## ChatGPT Work vs Claude Cowork

The Coke-vs-Pepsi pair. Both are flat-price subscriptions starting at $20 a month and both work across your files and apps, so the choice is about fit.

- **Pick ChatGPT Work** if you already use ChatGPT daily, need a connector that only its 1,400+ plugin catalog has, want Sites for shareable dashboards, or want GPT-6 Astra without paying for Pro.
- **Pick Claude** if you like how it writes, want its Office add-ins (one conversation can span Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook), want to point it at folders on your own computer through Claude Desktop, or want to package your firm's way of working as skills and plugins you can install from a file or your own marketplace.

Both are solid. If you're still torn, run the same real task, such as a client summary from three files, through each on a trial month and compare the output, not the demo.

## Claude vs Copilot inside Microsoft 365

If your company is on Microsoft 365, you don't have to pick Copilot to get AI in Office.

- **Claude for Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook** are add-ins from Microsoft AppSource, generally available on Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. Claude for Excel can explain formulas with cell-level citations, change assumptions while keeping formulas intact, and trace errors. It doesn't support data tables, macros, or VBA. With cross-app mode on (default on for Pro and Max, off for Team and Enterprise), one conversation can read a workbook and update a deck.
- **Claude's Microsoft 365 connector** searches SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook, and Teams, and can send mail, manage calendar events, update SharePoint files, and post Teams messages. It needs a work or school account, and a Microsoft Entra Global Administrator has to grant tenant consent.

Many firms will run both: Copilot for tenant-wide search and meeting recaps, and Claude for drafting in a specific professional format. Microsoft doesn't publish a per-task price, because each task is priced from "model use, context retrieval, tool calls, and runtime." Budget for it like cloud spend, not like a seat. Cowork is also in **preview for personal accounts** on Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium, and Pro.

Two Copilot details matter for regulated or EU-based firms. First, Anthropic models in Microsoft products "are currently excluded from the EU Data Boundary." Second, customers in the EU, EFTA, and UK have Anthropic models turned **off by default**, and an AI Administrator or Global Administrator must opt in. Because Copilot Cowork runs on Anthropic models at GA, check that setting before you assume Cowork is available to your EU staff.

## Choose ChatGPT Work if…

- You already use ChatGPT every day and don't want a second subscription.
- You need a connector that's in ChatGPT's plugin catalog and not elsewhere.
- You want GPT-6 Astra for agentic work at the Plus price.
- You want shareable interactive pages (Sites) as a deliverable.

## Choose Claude (Cowork) if…

- You're a solo professional or small firm and want a flat, predictable price.
- Your working files are on your own computer, not in a company tenant.
- You want reusable, profession-specific workflows as skills or plugins.
- You want AI inside Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook without buying Copilot.

## Choose Copilot Cowork if…

- Your company already pays for Microsoft 365 Copilot.
- The work depends on mail, meetings, Teams chats, and SharePoint history.
- IT wants tenant-level spending caps, Microsoft's data terms, and admin control.
- You're comfortable with per-task billing instead of a flat price.

## Where Claude is strongest: reusable professional workflows

A blank agent is only as good as your prompt. Claude's plugin system lets you load a workflow once, including format, guardrails, and voice, and reuse it. This site publishes free Claude plugins for specific professions, for example [bookkeeper](/plugins/bookkeeper), [management consultant](/plugins/management-consultant), [real estate](/plugins/real-estate), [executive assistant](/plugins/executive-assistant), and [financial advisor](/plugins/financial-advisor). In the Claude desktop app, go to **Customize → Plugins → Add → Add marketplace**, paste `alexclowe/awesome-claude-cowork-plugins`, select **Sync**, then **Browse → Personal** and install the one you want. The plugin marketplace needs a paid Claude plan.

### Which AI coworker doesn't train on my data?

On business plans, none of the three trains on your content by default: Claude Team and Enterprise, ChatGPT Business and Enterprise, and Microsoft 365 Copilot all say so. On personal plans it's different. Claude Free, Pro, and Max and ChatGPT Free, Plus, and Pro both list model training as 'opt-out', so turn it off in settings if you use a personal account for client work.

### Can I use Claude inside Microsoft 365 instead of Copilot?

Yes. On Claude Pro and above, the Claude for Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook add-ins work inside those Office apps and can share context across them. Separately, Claude's Microsoft 365 connector can search SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook, and Teams and take actions like sending mail. It needs a work or school Microsoft account and tenant consent from a Microsoft Entra Global Administrator.
