# Claude Opus 5.5 vs Fable 5.1 (Sept 2026): Which to Use, and What It Does to Your Usage Limits
> Opus 5.5 performs at Fable 5.1's level on most work at $4/$20 instead of $10/$50, and it is inside your Pro plan where Fable is not. Here's the plan-by-plan access table, the community's limits math, the five effort levels explained, and when Fable 5.1 is still worth it.

---> **TL;DR:** Anthropic says Opus 5.5 "performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work." It costs $4/$20 per million tokens against Fable's $10/$50, it is inside Claude Pro's normal limits where Fable 5.1 is not, and where Fable is included at all (Max, Team Premium) it is capped at half your weekly usage. That combination is why the community's estimate for switching your daily model is around four times the usable work per week. Make Opus 5.5 at medium effort your default. Keep Fable 5.1 for the biggest problems, the deliverable that must be right first time, or the long agentic run where Opus at xhigh still falls short. And if you carried an effort setting over from Opus 5, reset it: the default dropped from high to medium.

Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22, 2026, three weeks after Claude Fable 5.1, and described it as a model that matches its own flagship on most work for 40% less than Opus 5 cost to run. For a professional deciding which model to point at real work, the questions are practical: which one does your plan actually include, how much more can you do in a week if you switch, what do the five effort levels mean, and where is Fable 5.1 still the better call. This post answers all four with Anthropic's published figures and the early independent testing. For the single-model write-ups, see [our Opus 5.5 explainer](/blog/claude-opus-5-5-for-professionals-2026) and [our Fable 5.1 explainer](/blog/claude-fable-5-1-for-professionals-2026).

| If you… | Pick | Because |
|---|---|---|
| Want one default model for writing, analysis, documents, and code | **Opus 5.5 at medium effort** | Fable-level results on most work, in every paid plan's limits, at 2.5x lower token prices |
| Are on Claude Pro | **Opus 5.5** | Fable 5.1 on Pro bills as usage credits at API rates; Opus 5.5 is included |
| Run multi-hour agentic jobs and Opus 5.5 at xhigh still falls short | **Fable 5.1** | Anthropic's own escalation rule; Fable is included on Max and Team Premium for up to half your weekly usage |
| Need the deliverable right the first time, or prefer Fable's prose | **Fable 5.1** | Every's testers found Fable did the deck better and write tighter; Opus 5.5 buries the point |
| Moved an Opus 5 workflow over and it got slower or pricier | **Opus 5.5, but reset effort to medium** | Effort names are not comparable across models; carrying over high or xhigh spends more than it did |

## The two models side by side

Specs verified against Anthropic's model documentation and pricing page on September 27, 2026.

| Spec | **Claude Opus 5.5** | **Claude Fable 5.1** |
|---|---|---|
| Released | September 22, 2026 | September 1, 2026 |
| API price (input / output) | $4 / $20 per M tokens | $10 / $50 per M tokens |
| Cache read / cache write (5-minute) | $0.20 / $5 per M tokens | $0.25 / $12.50 per M tokens |
| Context window / max output | 1M / 128K | 1M / 128K |
| Knowledge cutoff | June 2026 | June 2026 |
| Thinking | Adaptive, always on | Adaptive, always on |
| Default effort | `medium` | `high` |
| Relative latency (Anthropic's label) | Moderate | Slower |
| Included in Pro? | Yes | No (usage credits) |
| Included in Max / Team Premium? | Yes | Up to 50% of weekly limits |
| Fast mode | Yes, $8 / $40 per M tokens, up to 2.5x speed | Not listed |

Two lines matter most. The list price is 2.5 times lower on Opus 5.5 for both input and output. And the default effort is one notch lower, which is a feature, not a downgrade, for reasons covered below.

## What "Fable-level on most work" actually means

Anthropic's launch post shows Opus 5.5 ahead of Fable 5.1 on every benchmark it published: 66.4% versus 55.8% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 (agentic coding), 54.4% versus 50.3% on FrontierCode, 57.8% versus 51.8% on CursorBench, 1846 versus 1735 Elo on GDPval-AA (professional work across 44 occupations), and 81.8% versus 80.7% on OSWorld computer use. In its own internal tests, Opus 5.5 rewrote a large piece of C software into Rust in 9.5 hours to Fable 5.1's 12, at 51% lower cost, and in a research-report test where invented figures meant failure, 16 of 18 Opus 5.5 reports passed while no Fable 5.1 or Opus 5 attempt did.

Anthropic then adds the caveat that matters for buyers: "at these levels of capability we've found that benchmark margins have become a less reliable guide to real-world differences. In our own use, the gap between Opus 5.5 and Claude Fable 5.1 is narrower than these scores suggest."

The early independent reads agree with the caveat more than the table:

- **Every's Vibe Check**, whose writers had moved to OpenAI's Codex after Opus 5, found Opus 5.5 "pulling our Codex converts back to Claude." One builder put it at about 90% of Fable for code and "as good as Fable and sometimes better" for product work; another still prefers Fable "as a writer and for the bigger, meatier problems."
- **Zvi Mowshowitz's** read of the system card is that Opus 5.5 is "mostly as safe as Fable 5.1" and that "you want your new default model to be Opus 5.5," with Fable or Astra kept for the tasks that need "that good old Big Model Smell."
- **Endor Labs** ran the counter-case: on their secure-code benchmark Opus 5.5 was faster and far cheaper than Fable 5.1 but passed fewer functional tests (68.7% versus 87.2%) and generated secure code slightly less often (33.5% versus 37.4%). If your work is security-sensitive code, that is a reason to keep Fable in the loop for review.

So the honest summary is Anthropic's own: start on Opus 5.5, escalate when it falls short.

## What your plan actually gives you

This is where the decision gets easy for most subscribers. Per claude.com/pricing on September 27, 2026:

| Plan | Price | Fable 5.1 | Opus 5.5 | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | No | No | Sonnet 5 and Haiku only |
| Pro | $20/mo ($17 annual) | Usage credits at API rates | Included | Opus 5.5 is your top included model; Fable is metered |
| Max 5x | $100/mo | Up to 50% of weekly limits | Included | Half your week can be Fable; all of it can be Opus 5.5 |
| Max 20x | $200/mo | Up to 50% of weekly limits | Included | Same rule, four times the pool |
| Team Standard | $20/seat annual ($25 monthly) | No | Included | Opus 5.5 is the ceiling |
| Team Premium | $100/seat annual ($125 monthly) | Up to 50% of weekly limits | Included | Same as Max |
| Enterprise | $20/seat + usage at API rates | Yes | Included | Metered, so the token price gap applies directly |

Anthropic also raised the five-hour usage limits on Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise on launch day, and gave subscribers a one-time rate-limit reset they can save for a deadline. It did not publish the new numbers. Usage on every plan is one shared pool across claude.ai, the desktop app, and Claude Code, and it resets on a rolling five-hour window with weekly caps on paid plans.

If you are on Pro, the comparison is not "which model is better," it is "included versus pay per token." That settles it for most people.

## The limits math

Nobody outside Anthropic knows exactly how each model draws down a plan's usage pool, so treat everything in this section as an estimate built on two published facts.

**Fact one:** Fable 5.1 may use at most 50% of a Max or Team Premium weekly limit. Opus 5.5 has no such cap.

**Fact two:** Opus 5.5 costs 2.5 times less per token than Fable 5.1 at list price, and Anthropic says it also finishes typical tasks with fewer tokens.

Developer Theo Browne ([@theo on X](https://x.com/theo/status/2104339496942948401)) turned those into the estimate that circulated most widely in the launch week. His version: Fable is allowed only half of a Claude Code subscription's usage, and "Opus 5.5 on High is over 2x cheaper than Fable 5.1 High," so "going from Fable 5.1 high to Opus 5.5 high is a 4.3x increase in limits."

The arithmetic, made explicit:

| Step | Fable 5.1 (high) | Opus 5.5 (high) |
|---|---|---|
| Share of weekly pool the model may use | 50% | 100% (2x) |
| Relative cost per comparable turn (Theo's estimate) | 1.0 | about 0.47 (about 2.15x cheaper) |
| Comparable turns per week, relative | 1x | 2 × 2.15 ≈ **4.3x** |

If you use list prices instead of Theo's cost estimate, the ratio is 2 × 2.5 = 5x. If plan accounting weights models differently from API prices, it could be lower. What is not in doubt is the direction: on the same plan, Opus 5.5 buys you several times more comparable work per week than Fable 5.1, and on Pro it buys you included work instead of metered work. Pro subscribers reported exactly that in the first week; one wrote that on the lowest paid tier it was "VERY hard to consume the limits." Anthropic's launch note that limits went up on the same day compounds it, though by an unstated amount.

## The five effort levels, explained

Effort is the single control for how much Claude thinks and therefore what a request costs and how long it takes. On Opus 5.5 thinking is always on and cannot be disabled, so effort is the dial. Anthropic's documentation lists five levels; despite some launch-week videos claiming a sixth, there is no "ultra."

| Level | What it is for (Anthropic's description) | Cost and latency | A professional example |
|---|---|---|---|
| `low` | "Most efficient. Significant token savings with some capability reduction." Simpler tasks, subagents. | Lowest | Summarize a meeting thread; classify a batch of support tickets; first pass on a bug list (Deloitte reported low caught 72% of known bugs in code review, beating Opus 5 at high) |
| `medium` | "Balanced approach with moderate token savings." **The default on Opus 5.5.** | Moderate | Draft the client memo, build the comparison table, run the routine agentic task. Anthropic says medium matches or beats Opus 5 at high on its evaluations |
| `high` | "Spends as many tokens as the task needs for excellent results." The default on every other model. | Higher | The board deck, the financial model with a one-page summary, a multi-file code change with tests |
| `xhigh` | "Extended capability for long-horizon work." Agentic and coding tasks over 30 minutes with token budgets in the millions. | High; long turns | An overnight codebase audit, a migration that runs unattended for hours |
| `max` | "Absolute maximum capability with no constraints on token spending." | Highest | The one problem this quarter where being right matters more than the bill |

Three details from Anthropic's guidance change how you should use this table.

**The default moved.** Opus 5 defaulted to `high`. Opus 5.5 defaults to `medium`. A request that omits the setting now runs one level lower than it did, and that is intentional: Anthropic's testing has Opus 5.5 at medium matching or beating Opus 5 at high on coding and knowledge-work evaluations, in fewer steps and with fewer tokens.

**Names are not comparable across models.** Anthropic says outright that "effort level names don't correspond to the same amount of thinking across models" and that at a given level Opus 5.5 "tends to think more per turn than Claude Opus 5, especially at xhigh and max." So the expensive mistake is carrying over the `high` or `xhigh` you set for Opus 5. You get longer turns and more output tokens than before, on a model that did not need them. Anthropic's advice is to set effort explicitly, start at medium, and run a sweep on your own tasks.

**Where you set it.** Effort is an API and Claude Code control. In claude.ai chat, the app manages thinking for you, and you steer with the model picker and your prompt. On Fable 5.1 the equivalent guidance is the mirror image: start at `high` (its default), step up to `xhigh` or `max` for the most capability-sensitive agentic work, and step down to `medium` or `low` once your own checks show quality holds. Both models support changing effort mid-conversation without losing the prompt cache.

[The Claude model picker](/tools/which-claude-model) now suggests a starting effort level alongside the model and plan, using these rules.

## Writing, for people who write for a living

The community's most consistent non-coding finding is about prose. Every measured Opus 5.5's output at a Flesch-Kincaid grade level of 6.95, "the most readable prose we've seen from an Anthropic or OpenAI model" and a full grade below Opus 5. Anthropic's launch post claims the same thing in its own words: clearer writing, the most important information up front, less jargon, better adherence to the writing rules you give it.

The same testers found the limit. Opus 5.5 "still buries the point": its drafts took 37 to 39 sentences to cover what a writer did in 21, and as an editor it "ranked behind even Opus 5, as well as GPT-5.6 Sol and Astra." Their working advice is to draft with Opus 5.5 at high effort or above, give it your own examples, then move the point to the top yourself or hand the draft to an editor. One of Every's writers still prefers Fable 5.1's prose outright and chose Fable for a deck that had to be right the first time.

For a professional, that maps to a simple split: Opus 5.5 for the volume of drafting, summaries, and client-facing explanations, where its readability is a genuine improvement; Fable 5.1, or a careful human pass, for the document where the first paragraph decides the outcome.

## Decision guide

- **If you are on Claude Pro**, use Opus 5.5 for everything and treat Fable 5.1 as a metered exception you turn on with usage credits for a specific hard problem.
- **If you are on Max or Team Premium and were using Fable 5.1 as your daily model**, switch the default to Opus 5.5 at medium. Spend the Fable half of your pool on the runs that need it rather than on routine work.
- **If you run long unattended agentic jobs**, start with Opus 5.5 at xhigh with a large output ceiling. Escalate to Fable 5.1 only when the run still falls short; that is Anthropic's own rule.
- **If the output is a security-sensitive codebase**, keep Fable 5.1 or a second model in the review loop. Endor Labs' secure-code numbers favor Fable.
- **If you moved an Opus 5 workflow over and it got slower or more expensive**, you almost certainly kept an old effort setting. Reset to medium and measure before raising it.
- **If you are on the Free plan**, none of this applies yet: you have Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5. Pro at $17 a month billed annually is the first rung that includes Opus 5.5.

## What comes next

Anthropic said in the launch post that Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Haiku 5.5 "will follow in the coming weeks, with many of the same improvements to performance, efficiency, and safety." When they land, the question for most professionals will shift from "Opus 5.5 or Fable 5.1" to "Sonnet 5.5 or Opus 5.5," and this page will be updated with the same plan and effort tables. Until then, Sonnet 5 remains the Free-plan default and the fast, cheap option ($2/$10) for routine work.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Claude Opus 5.5 as good as Fable 5.1?

Anthropic says Opus 5.5 'performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work,' and on its published benchmarks Opus 5.5 scores higher on agentic coding, knowledge work, and computer use. Anthropic also cautions that 'the gap between Opus 5.5 and Claude Fable 5.1 is narrower than these scores suggest.' Independent testers at Every put Opus 5.5 at roughly 90% of Fable for code and still prefer Fable for the biggest problems and for prose. Anthropic's own guidance is to start with Opus 5.5 and reach for Fable 5.1 when Opus at a higher effort level still falls short.

### Is Fable 5.1 included in Claude Pro?

No. On Claude Pro ($20/month, or $17/month billed annually), Fable 5.1 runs only on pay-as-you-go usage credits at API rates. Opus 5.5 is included in Pro's normal limits. Fable 5.1 is included on Max (up to 50% of weekly limits) and on Team Premium seats on the same basis. The Free plan has neither model.

### How much cheaper is Opus 5.5 than Fable 5.1?

On the API, Opus 5.5 is $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens, against $10 and $50 for Fable 5.1, so the list price is 2.5 times lower. Cache reads are $0.20 versus $0.25 per million. Anthropic also says Opus 5.5 finishes typical tasks with fewer tokens, which is why it quotes a 40% cost drop against Opus 5 rather than the 20% list-price cut. Anthropic has not published a per-task cost comparison against Fable 5.1 beyond individual examples, such as a code rewrite that cost 51% less.

### Does switching from Fable 5.1 to Opus 5.5 give me more usage on my Claude plan?

Almost certainly yes, but Anthropic has not published the multiplier. Two facts are documented: Fable 5.1 may use at most 50% of a Max or Team Premium weekly limit, and Opus 5.5 is priced 2.5 times lower per token. One developer's widely shared estimate, which treats Opus 5.5 at high effort as a bit over twice as cheap as Fable 5.1 at high, works out to 'roughly a 4.3x increase in limits.' Anthropic does not publish how each model is weighted against plan limits, so treat any specific multiplier as an estimate.

### What are the effort levels on Claude Opus 5.5?

Five: low, medium, high, xhigh, and max. Opus 5.5 defaults to medium; Fable 5.1, Opus 5, and Sonnet 5 default to high. Anthropic says effort level names do not correspond to the same amount of thinking across models, and that Opus 5.5 at medium matches or beats Opus 5 at high on its coding and knowledge-work evaluations. It recommends running your own effort sweep rather than carrying a setting over from an earlier model.

### Should I still pay for Claude Max to get Fable 5.1?

Only if you have a recurring need Opus 5.5 does not meet. Max ($100 or $200/month) buys 5x or 20x Pro's usage plus Fable 5.1 for up to half of it. If your reason for Max was Fable, test the same work on Opus 5.5 at high or xhigh first. If your reason was usage volume for Claude Code or long agentic sessions, Max still makes sense, and Opus 5.5's lower cost per turn stretches those limits further.
