Definition

Periodization is the systematic planning of athletic or fitness training into distinct phases (macrocycles, mesocycles, and microcycles) to optimize performance gains, prevent overtraining, and peak at the right time for competitions or goals.


What Is Periodization?

Periodization is a training methodology rooted in exercise science that divides a training program into structured time blocks, each with specific goals, intensities, and volumes. Originally developed for Olympic athletes by Soviet sports scientists in the 1960s, periodization has since been adopted across all levels of fitness—from competitive athletes to general population clients working with personal trainers.

The Three Levels of Periodization

#### Macrocycle

The macrocycle is the overall training plan, typically spanning 6 to 12 months (or an entire competitive season). It defines the big-picture progression from base fitness through peak performance and recovery.

#### Mesocycle

Mesocycles are blocks of 3 to 6 weeks within the macrocycle, each targeting a specific training quality. Common mesocycle phases include hypertrophy (muscle building), strength, power, and active recovery.

#### Microcycle

The microcycle is typically one week of training and represents the day-to-day programming. It specifies exercises, sets, reps, loads, and rest periods for each training session.

Common Periodization Models

Linear periodization progressively increases intensity while decreasing volume over time. Undulating periodization varies intensity and volume within each week. Block periodization concentrates on one training quality per mesocycle. Each model has advantages depending on the client's experience level, goals, and schedule.
