Opus 5.5 — the newest Opus (Sept 22, 2026) and the model Anthropic now says to start with for most workloads — it replaces Opus 5 at a 20% lower price, built for deliberative, high-stakes, and multi-step agentic work with a 1M-token context window. On claude.ai the picker starts you on Sonnet 5, so switch it to Opus 5.5 (every paid plan includes it). On the Free plan, or for quick tasks where speed matters more than depth, Sonnet 5 is the right pick.

Start at medium — the Opus 5.5 default — Anthropic says it matches or beats Opus 5 at high on coding and knowledge-work evaluations, in fewer steps and tokens. Don't carry over an Opus 5 setting: the default dropped from high to medium and the level names don't mean the same amount of thinking across models. Effort is an API and Claude Code setting; in claude.ai chat the app manages thinking depth for you, so this applies to your Claude Code sessions.
Claude Cowork and plugin installs need a paid plan (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise) — they're not on Free. The Free tier (Sonnet 5 + limited Haiku) is fine for trying Claude chat before you upgrade. Above these three sits Claude Fable 5.1, Anthropic's most capable generally available model: included on Max (up to 50% of weekly usage), pay-as-you-go via usage credits on Pro, not on Free.
