Can ChatGPT Make Animated GIFs Now?
Yes. As of November 4, 2026, OpenAI is rolling out animated GIF creation in ChatGPT, built on its new Images 2.6 model. You can turn a text prompt or an uploaded photo into a GIF, change how fast it plays, and look at (and, per The Verge, edit) individual frames. Here's how it works, who gets it, and what to check before a GIF goes into a deck or an email.

TL;DR. Yes. As of November 4, 2026, OpenAI is rolling out animated GIF creation in ChatGPT, built on a new image model, Images 2.6. You can make a GIF from a text prompt or an uploaded photo, change how fast it plays, and view its individual frames (The Verge reports you can edit single frames too). Launch coverage says it's reaching all ChatGPT and Codex users on web, desktop and mobile, but OpenAI hasn't yet published which plans get how many.
For most of the last two years, asking ChatGPT for a GIF got you either a still image or a set of frames you had to stitch together in another app. As XDA Developers put it, you "couldn't just tell ChatGPT to make a GIF and have it complete the task in a single step." That changed on November 4.
What changed on November 4
The Verge reported that OpenAI is rolling out GIF creation in ChatGPT as part of a new image model, Images 2.6. The Decoder, The Next Web and XDA Developers reported the same details the same day. Here's what the feature does:
- Prompt or photo in, GIF out. Describe the animation in plain words, or upload a photo and ask ChatGPT to animate it. OpenAI's demo prompt was "Can you make a GIF of a cat dancing?"
- Playback speed. After the GIF is generated, you can speed it up or slow it down.
- Frame-level view. You can see the individual frames that make up the animation. The Verge, as relayed by The Decoder, The Next Web and Unite.AI, reports that you can also edit individual frames. XDA mentions only viewing them.
- Consistent characters. The Decoder notes that in OpenAI's demo, the character stayed recognizable from frame to frame, which earlier image models often struggled with.
OpenAI also says Images 2.6 makes image generation in ChatGPT faster in general, and that people now create more than 4 billion images a week across ChatGPT and its API, up from about 3 billion in September. Both are OpenAI's own figures.
Images 2.6 arrives two months after Images 2.5 and its Sketch tool (September 8). Sketch, multi-turn editing and the rest of ChatGPT's image tools carry forward. This release adds animation and speed.
Who gets it, and is there a limit?
The Verge reports that Images 2.6 is rolling out to all ChatGPT and Codex users on the web, desktop and mobile apps. "Rolling out" means it may not reach your account on day one.
What we couldn't verify on November 4:
- Plan-level access. OpenAI has not published a help-center article or announcement post for Images 2.6, so there's no official statement yet on whether Free and Go get exactly the same GIF features as Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise.
- GIF quotas. OpenAI doesn't publish exact image counts for any plan, and it hasn't said how a GIF counts against your image allowance. Free plans have always had tighter image limits than paid ones. Your live remaining allowance shows in ChatGPT's settings.
- Length and size limits. No source we trust has documented a maximum number of frames, duration or resolution.
We'll update this post when OpenAI's help center covers the feature.
What about developers and the API?
Launch coverage says OpenAI is introducing two API models, GPT-Image-2.6 Flare (built for speed) and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst (built for quality), following the same naming as the 2.5 models. As of November 4, neither appears in OpenAI's developer changelog, and OpenAI hasn't documented GIF output in the API. If you build on the Images API, wait for the changelog entry and pricing before changing anything.
Where a GIF actually helps at work
A GIF is a few seconds of looping motion with no sound. That's useful in a handful of professional places:
- Slides. A short loop showing a process (a form being filled in, a status moving from red to green) can replace three static slides. PowerPoint and Google Slides both play animated GIFs during a presentation.
- Team updates and chat. A quick visual in Slack or Teams can explain a change faster than a paragraph.
- Training and how-to material. A looping illustration of a step helps more than a description of it. (For real software steps, a screen recording is still more accurate than an AI-generated imitation.)
- Social posts and newsletters. Motion catches the eye in a feed. Keep it brief and on-brand.
Before you send one: four checks
- Make frame one stand on its own. Some email clients, including older desktop versions of Outlook for Windows, show only the first frame of a GIF. A printed or PDF-exported deck shows a single frame too. If the first frame is blank or mid-motion, your message is lost.
- Check every frame. AI animation can drift: text that warps, a logo that changes shape, a hand with the wrong number of fingers in frame six. Now that you can view the frames, look at each one before you share.
- Watch the file size. Animated GIFs get heavy fast, and large ones load slowly in email and can push a message over attachment limits. Shorter and slower usually beats longer and smoother.
- Get permission for real people. Animating a photo of a colleague, client or customer is a different thing from animating a cartoon cat. Ask first, and follow your organization's rules on AI-generated images and on labeling them.
Can Claude or other assistants do this?
Claude can't. It can't generate images at all, animated or still, on any plan. It writes visuals as code (charts, SVG diagrams, HTML pages) instead. We cover that in Can Claude generate images?. If you mainly use Claude and occasionally need an animated visual, ChatGPT's new GIF tool is now a one-step option.

Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT make animated GIFs?+
Yes. On November 4, 2026, OpenAI began rolling out animated GIF creation in ChatGPT, built on its Images 2.6 image model, as reported by The Verge and confirmed by The Decoder, XDA Developers and The Next Web. Before this, ChatGPT could not make a GIF in a single step.
How do I make a GIF in ChatGPT?+
Ask for one in plain language, for example 'Make a GIF of a cat dancing', which was OpenAI's own demo prompt, or upload a photo and ask ChatGPT to animate it. After it's generated you can change the playback speed and view the individual frames. The Verge reports you can also edit single frames.
Is GIF creation free in ChatGPT?+
Coverage of the launch says Images 2.6 is rolling out to all ChatGPT and Codex users on web, desktop and mobile. As of November 4, 2026, OpenAI has not published plan-level access or a GIF quota in its help center. Image generation on the Free plan has always had tighter limits than paid plans, so expect GIFs to count against your image allowance; your live limits show in ChatGPT's settings.
What is ChatGPT Images 2.6?+
Images 2.6 is OpenAI's newest image model in ChatGPT, released two months after Images 2.5 (September 8, 2026). Besides GIF creation, OpenAI says it makes image generation faster. It replaces Images 2.5 as the model behind ChatGPT's image tools as it rolls out.
Can developers make GIFs through the OpenAI API?+
Not yet confirmed. Launch coverage says OpenAI is introducing two API models, GPT-Image-2.6 Flare (speed) and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst (quality). As of November 4, 2026, neither appears in OpenAI's developer changelog, and no API documentation for GIF output has been published. Treat API GIF support as unannounced until OpenAI documents it.
Can Claude make GIFs?+
No. Claude cannot generate or edit images of any kind, animated or still, on any plan. It can produce visuals that live in code, such as charts, SVG diagrams and HTML pages, but for a GIF you need an image-capable tool such as ChatGPT.
