What just happened

The Preparedness team ran the evaluations that produced OpenAI's Preparedness Framework ratings, including the "Critical" cybersecurity tier.

The team's work has been distributed. Biological and cybersecurity risk evaluations went to domain specialists on existing teams. Dylan Scandinaro, the Preparedness team's former lead, now focuses on risks from self-improving AI systems.

Co-founder Greg Brockman framed the change as a maturation: safety work is now "woven more tightly into model development." Chief Research Officer Mark Chen offered similar reasoning when safety and research were merged in July: integrating them gives safety staff "an earlier and more direct role in shaping key model, product and launch decisions."
