TL;DR. Claude has a Free plan ($0), a Pro plan ($17/month billed annually, $20 monthly) that's the right fit for most professionals and is the first plan that includes Claude Cowork, two Max plans ($100/month for 5x Pro's usage, $200/month for 20x) that add headroom rather than features, and Team/Enterprise plans for organizations. Plugins and Agent Skills don't cost extra — they run on the plan you already have. Prices and limits change, so treat the numbers here as a September 2026 snapshot and confirm at claude.com/pricing.

Is Claude Cowork free?

No — Claude Cowork is not on the Free plan. It's included, at no extra charge, with every paid plan: Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. Free gets you Claude chat on the web, iOS, Android, and the desktop app, but not Cowork — the agent workspace that does multi-step work across your files, apps, and connectors. Anthropic's support page lists Cowork as available on all paid plans in Claude Desktop for macOS and Windows (Windows needs the latest version of the app), plus web and mobile on Pro, Max, and Team. So the cheapest way to run Cowork is Pro at $17–$20/month. If you're not sure what Cowork actually does before paying for it, start with what Claude Cowork is.

Below: every plan top to bottom, then the API-vs-subscription trap.

The plans, top to bottom

Free — $0. Use Claude at claude.ai, in the mobile apps, or in the desktop app with no payment. The Free feature list is broader than people expect: chat, code generation and data visualization, web search, memory across conversations, file creation and code execution, desktop extensions, Slack and Google Workspace connectors, remote MCP, and extended thinking. It's great for trying Claude out and for light, occasional use. The catches: lower usage limits, and the paid-only products — Cowork, Claude Code, Claude Design, Claude Science, Research, and unlimited projects — all start at Pro.

Pro — $17/month billed annually (about $200 up front), or $20 billed monthly. This is the plan most working professionals want. Anthropic's own list is "everything in Free, plus": more usage, Claude Cowork, Claude Code, Claude Design, Claude Science, unlimited projects, Research, access to more models — including Opus 5, the strongest model included in Pro — and Claude for Microsoft 365. If you've read that Cowork costs extra on top of Pro, that's a myth: it's part of the Pro subscription. Pro is almost always the right starting point.

Max — from $100/month. Two tiers of the same idea: more of everything. Max 5x is $100/month and Max 20x is $200/month, the multiplier being usage relative to Pro. Max also adds higher output limits, early access to advanced features, and priority access at high-traffic times. Two model notes: Opus 5 is the default on Max, and Max is where Fable 5.1 (Anthropic's most capable generally available model, released September 1, 2026) stays inside the subscription. Anthropic's plan table shows the Fable models at 50% of weekly limits on Max, while Pro users reach them only through pay-as-you-go usage credits. If you regularly bump into Pro's limits, Max is the upgrade. If you don't, you don't need it.

Team — $20 per member/month billed annually ($25 monthly) for Standard seats; $100/$125 for Premium seats. For small businesses and teams. Standard seats get 1.25x Pro's usage; Premium seats get 6.25x, and an organization can mix the two. Adds central billing, shared administration, and collaboration features, with a minimum number of seats. This is the "we want Claude for the whole office" option — and Cowork is included, with an org-wide admin toggle.

Enterprise — custom pricing. For larger organizations that need SSO, audit logs, custom data-retention controls, and the strongest data-handling guarantees. Priced by sales, not self-serve.

"Wait, is this the API or the subscription?"

This trips people up constantly. There are two completely separate ways to pay for Claude:

  • The subscription (Free / Pro / Max / Team / Enterprise) — a flat monthly fee for using Claude through the app and Cowork. This is what almost every professional wants.
  • The API — pay-per-use pricing measured in tokens (chunks of text), billed by how much you send and receive. This is for developers building Claude into their own software, not for using the Claude app.

If you're a professional who wants to use Claude for your work, you want a subscription, not the API. The per-token API prices you might see quoted have nothing to do with your monthly bill.

For the developers and Claude Code users who do pay per token, here's the current ladder (per million input/output tokens, September 2026):

Model API price (input / output)
Fable 5.1 (most capable; cache reads $0.25, down from $1 on Fable 5) $10 / $50
Opus 5 (newest Opus — same price as Opus 4.8 was) $5 / $25
Sonnet 5 (the default) $2 / $10
Haiku 4.5 (fastest, cheapest) $1 / $5

Note that the Fable models are not part of Pro's plan limits — on Pro they run on pay-as-you-go usage credits at these API rates — while Max includes Fable 5.1 up to 50% of weekly usage. Fable 5 remains available as a legacy model at the same per-token price.

Sonnet 5's $2 / $10 launch pricing is now the standard price: the increase to $3 / $15 that Anthropic had scheduled for September 1, 2026 was cancelled.

What about plugins, skills, and the profession packs?

Claude's Agent Skills and Cowork plugins are not separate purchases from Anthropic — they run on whatever paid plan you already have. You can install Anthropic's free open-source plugins, community skills, or paid third-party packs.

The profession packs sold here at The AI Career Lab are a one-time purchase from us — they're a library of skills you install into your own Claude Cowork. You pay us once for the pack; you pay Anthropic for your Claude plan. The two are separate, and neither charges you per-use after that.

Which plan should you actually pick?

  • Just exploring? Start on Free.
  • Using Claude for real work most days, or want Cowork at all? Pro ($17–$20/mo) — Cowork is included from here up.
  • Hitting limits constantly / running Cowork for hours? Max ($100 or $200/mo).
  • Rolling it out to a team or firm? Team, or Enterprise if you need compliance controls.

Start at Pro. It's the plan the rest of this site assumes, and it's almost certainly enough. Move up only when you feel a limit, not before.

Worth knowing what Pro actually unlocks beyond higher limits: Cowork, Claude Code, and the Chrome extension are all paid-only, and chat is the only surface on Free. Which Claude surface for which task walks through what you get for the $20.

Plan features and prices are a September 2026 snapshot from claude.com/pricing and Anthropic's Cowork support articles; Team seat prices and usage multipliers are as published in Anthropic's plan tables at that date. Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Cowork free?+

No. Claude Cowork is included with every paid Claude plan — Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise — at no extra charge, but it is not part of the Free plan. Free gets chat on web, mobile, and the desktop app, but not Cowork. The cheapest way in is Pro at $17/month billed annually or $20 billed monthly. Cowork runs in the Claude desktop app on both macOS and Windows on any paid plan.

Is Claude free?+

Yes — Claude has a free plan you can use at claude.ai with no credit card. It includes chat on web, iOS, Android, and desktop, web search, memory, file creation, code execution, connectors, and extended thinking. What it lacks is usage headroom and the paid-only products: Claude Cowork, Claude Code, Claude Design, and Research all start at Pro. For regular professional work, most people move to Pro.

Do Claude plugins and skills cost extra?+

No. Claude's Agent Skills and Cowork plugins run on top of your existing paid Claude plan — there's no per-plugin fee from Anthropic. Third-party plugin packs (like the profession packs sold by The AI Career Lab) are a one-time purchase you make from the seller, separate from your Claude subscription, but Anthropic doesn't charge you to install or run them.

What's the difference between Pro and Max?+

Same core features, different usage limits. Pro ($17/month annual, $20 monthly) is plenty for most individual professionals. Max starts at $100/month for 5x Pro's usage, or $200/month for 20x, and adds higher output limits, priority access at busy times, and early access to new features. Max also includes Fable 5.1 usage inside the subscription (up to 50% of weekly usage), while on Pro the Fable models run on pay-as-you-go usage credits instead.
