Claude Sonnet 5.5: Should You Use It Instead of Opus 5.5? (September 2026)
Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5 on September 28, 2026. On Anthropic's own benchmarks it lands within a few points of Opus 5.5 at half the token price, while Anthropic says Opus 5.5 is still clearly stronger at open-ended work. Here's when Sonnet 5.5 is enough, what changed from Sonnet 5, and what is still unconfirmed about plan access.
So — which one should you buy?
TL;DR: Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5 on September 28, 2026. On Anthropic's own benchmarks it scores within about two points of Opus 5.5 on professional knowledge work and coding, at half the token price ($2/$10 versus $4/$20 per million tokens) and more than 30% faster output than Sonnet 5. Anthropic also says Opus 5.5 "remains clearly stronger at complex, open-ended work requiring sustained judgment." So use Sonnet 5.5 for routine, well-defined work and keep Opus 5.5 for the deliverables that need judgment. Anthropic has not yet published which plans get Sonnet 5.5 by default; check your model picker.
For most professionals the answer is "yes, for a lot of your work, but not all of it." Sonnet 5.5 closes most of the gap to Opus 5.5 on the tasks Anthropic measures, and it is cheaper and faster. Where it still falls short is the kind of work that is hard to benchmark: the ambiguous brief, the long document where the structure is the hard part, the analysis where you need the model to push back.
This post covers what changed, how the two models compare on Anthropic's published numbers, what is and is not confirmed about plan access, and a simple way to split your work between them. For the Opus 5.5 versus Fable 5.1 decision, see our Opus 5.5 vs Fable 5.1 guide.
What Anthropic released
Sonnet 5.5 is the second model in the Claude 5.5 family, six days after Opus 5.5. The key specs, from Anthropic's model documentation on September 28, 2026:
| Spec | Claude Sonnet 5.5 | Claude Opus 5.5 | Claude Sonnet 5 (now legacy) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Released | September 28, 2026 | September 22, 2026 | June 30, 2026 |
| API price (input / output) | $2 / $10 per M tokens | $4 / $20 per M tokens | $2 / $10 per M tokens |
| Context window / max output | 1M / 128K | 1M / 128K | 1M / 128K |
| Thinking | Adaptive | Adaptive, always on | Adaptive |
| Default effort (API) | high |
medium |
high |
| Relative latency (Anthropic's label) | Fast | Moderate | — |
| Knowledge cutoff | June 2026 | June 2026 | — |
Three changes matter for day-to-day use:
- Same price as Sonnet 5, fewer tokens per task. Anthropic says Sonnet 5.5 "requires fewer tokens per task than Sonnet 5, so it's less expensive to run" and "generates output 30%+ faster." The Decoder reports that this adds up to effective costs up to 30% lower per task.
- A different default effort in the apps. Anthropic says "in Claude Code and our apps, the default effort is set to Medium, while the Claude Platform defaults to High." If you compare results between the app and the API, you are not comparing like for like unless you set effort yourself.
- Stricter cyber safeguards. Because Sonnet 5.5's security capabilities jumped, Anthropic is deploying it with safeguards similar to Opus 5.5's. Routine bug-fixing is fine, but "higher-risk cybersecurity tasks will visibly fall back to Sonnet 5." Security teams may see that switch mid-conversation.
How close is it to Opus 5.5?
Anthropic's launch table, all figures from Anthropic:
| Benchmark (what it tests) | Sonnet 5.5 | Opus 5.5 | Sonnet 5 |
|---|---|---|---|
| GDPval-AA v2.1 (professional knowledge work, Elo) | 1,844 | 1,846 | 1,449 |
| AA-Briefcase v1.1 (knowledge work, Elo) | 1,811 | 1,822 | 1,359 |
| CursorBench 4.0 (agentic coding) | 55.5% | 57.8% | 34.1% |
| Terminal-Bench 4.0 (agentic coding) | 70.6% | 66.4% | 10.3% |
| FrontierCode 1.1 (agentic coding) | 46.2% | 54.4% | 42.4% |
| OSWorld 2.1 (computer use) | 80.1% | 81.8% | 57.0% |
| Humanity's Last Exam (with tools) | 64.5% | 67.7% | 54.9% |
Two things stand out. First, the jump from Sonnet 5 is large on nearly every row, especially knowledge work (GDPval-AA up almost 400 points). Second, on the knowledge-work tests most relevant to non-developers, Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 are effectively tied.
Anthropic is careful not to oversell that. Right under the table it writes that "benchmark scores capture only one facet of a model's capabilities; in our own testing, and in that of external testers, Opus 5.5 remains clearly stronger at complex, open-ended work requiring sustained judgment." TechCrunch's launch coverage frames Sonnet 5.5 the same way: a cheaper, faster work partner for everyday tasks, not a replacement for the top model.
Anthropic adds one more cost claim worth knowing: "On several benchmarks, Sonnet 5.5 at Low or Medium effort beats Sonnet 5's best score for about a tenth of the cost per task." If you run Claude through the API at volume, testing lower effort levels is the fastest saving available.
Which plans get it
This is the part to treat carefully. As of September 28, 2026:
- Anthropic's pricing page lists Sonnet 5.5 as the current Sonnet and moves Sonnet 5 to "legacy models."
- The same page lists "Sonnet" as included on every plan: Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, but it does not name a version per plan.
- Anthropic has not yet published plan-level access for Sonnet 5.5 in its help center, and it has not said whether Sonnet 5.5 is now the default model in the Claude apps. Sonnet 5 was the Free and Pro default after its June launch.
Until the help center says otherwise, the reliable check is your own model picker. We will update this section when Anthropic publishes plan access.
When to use Sonnet 5.5 and when to stay on Opus 5.5
| If your task is… | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Summaries, first drafts, email replies, meeting notes | Sonnet 5.5 | Well-defined work where the knowledge-work scores are effectively tied, at half the cost and faster |
| Routine spreadsheet, document, or data clean-up | Sonnet 5.5 | Speed matters more than depth; try medium or low effort |
| Everyday coding and agentic tasks with clear goals | Sonnet 5.5 | Beats Opus 5.5 on Terminal-Bench and is close on CursorBench |
| An ambiguous brief, a strategy memo, a hard analysis | Opus 5.5 | Anthropic's own caveat: Opus is "clearly stronger" at open-ended work needing sustained judgment |
| Large, hard coding problems | Opus 5.5 | The clearest benchmark gap is FrontierCode (54.4% versus 46.2%) |
| Security research | Opus 5.5 or Fable 5.1 | Higher-risk cyber tasks on Sonnet 5.5 fall back to Sonnet 5 |
On a subscription plan, the practical benefit is the same one Opus 5.5 brought over Fable 5.1: a cheaper model draws down your usage pool more slowly. Anthropic does not publish how each model is weighted against plan limits, so there is no official multiplier. The direction is clear, though: routine work moved to Sonnet 5.5 leaves more of your week for Opus 5.5 where it counts.
What to do this week
- Chat users: open the model picker and see which Sonnet you are on. If Sonnet 5.5 is there, try it on one routine task you do every week and compare against Opus 5.5.
- Claude Code users: remember the default effort in Claude Code is medium. If results feel thin on a hard task, raise effort before switching models.
- API users: read Anthropic's migration guide before swapping
claude-sonnet-5forclaude-sonnet-5-5. Anthropic lists five breaking changes, including that forced tool use now returns an error, plus one change to the response shape: text between tool calls now comes back in thinking blocks. - Everyone: do not upgrade or downgrade a plan on the strength of this launch alone. Plan access has not been published yet.
Anthropic says Claude Haiku 5.5 "will join the Claude 5.5 family in the coming weeks." When it lands, the cheap-and-fast option changes again.
Model pricing, plan access, and defaults change often. This post reflects Anthropic's published documentation as of September 28, 2026.

What is Claude Sonnet 5.5?+
Claude Sonnet 5.5 (API ID claude-sonnet-5-5) is Anthropic's new mid-tier model, released September 28, 2026. It replaces Sonnet 5 as the current Sonnet; Anthropic's pricing page now lists Sonnet 5 under legacy models. It has a 1M-token context window, 128K max output, adaptive thinking, and costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens on the API, the same as Sonnet 5.
Is Sonnet 5.5 as good as Opus 5.5?+
Close on Anthropic's published benchmarks, but not across the board. It scores 1,844 versus Opus 5.5's 1,846 on GDPval-AA (professional knowledge work) and 55.5% versus 57.8% on CursorBench, and it beats Opus 5.5 on Terminal-Bench 4.0 (70.6% versus 66.4%). It trails more clearly on FrontierCode (46.2% versus 54.4%) and Humanity's Last Exam (64.5% versus 67.7%). Anthropic itself says Opus 5.5 'remains clearly stronger at complex, open-ended work requiring sustained judgment.'
How much does Claude Sonnet 5.5 cost?+
On the API, $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with cache reads at $0.20 per million and a 50% Batch API discount. That is half of Opus 5.5's $4/$20. Anthropic also says Sonnet 5.5 uses fewer tokens per task than Sonnet 5 and generates output more than 30% faster, and The Decoder reports that works out to up to 30% lower cost per task. On subscription plans there is no separate Sonnet 5.5 charge; usage comes out of your plan's limits.
Is Sonnet 5.5 available on the Free plan?+
Anthropic has not yet published plan-level access for Sonnet 5.5. Its pricing page lists 'Sonnet' on every plan, Free included, and lists Sonnet 5.5 as the current Sonnet, but as of September 28, 2026 no help-center article states which Sonnet version the Free plan runs or whether Sonnet 5.5 is now the default in the Claude apps. Check the model picker in your own account.
Do I need to change anything?+
Chat users do not need to do anything. API users on claude-sonnet-5 should read Anthropic's migration guide before switching the model string: Anthropic lists five breaking changes, including that forced tool use now returns an error and that the older computer-use tool version is not accepted on the Claude API and Google Cloud. Also note that the default effort differs by surface: medium in Claude Code and the Claude apps, high on the API.
Is there a Haiku 5.5?+
Not yet. Anthropic says Claude Haiku 5.5 'will join the Claude 5.5 family in the coming weeks' but has not given a date. Until then, Haiku 4.5 remains the current Haiku.
