TL;DR. Claude Cowork runs on Windows today. Download the Claude desktop app from claude.com/download (standard Windows or Windows arm64), sign in with a paid plan (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise; not Free), and pick Cowork in the message box. Anthropic's one Windows-specific rule: Cowork requires the latest version of Claude for Windows, so update the app if you already have it. Same agent, same plugins, same approvals as on Mac.
"Claude Cowork for Windows" is a top search because Cowork originally shipped to Mac first, and a lot of guidance online still says Windows is "coming." It's here. This guide walks through what Anthropic's own pages say about Windows availability, how to download and set it up, three tasks to try in your first hour, and when you'd want Claude Code instead.
Is Claude Cowork on Windows? Yes
Anthropic's help article Get started with Claude Cowork lists availability by surface. The Windows line reads, in full: "Claude Desktop for Windows — Available on all paid plans. Cowork requires the latest version of Claude for Windows. Download or update at claude.com/download."
The product page agrees: its download buttons read "Download for Windows" and "Windows (arm64)," with the note "Works with a paid plan."
Two things follow from that:
- There is no separate Cowork app for Windows. Cowork is a mode inside the Claude desktop app. The download page's tagline is "Chat, Claude Cowork, and Claude Code, all in one place."
- You need a paid plan. Cowork is not on the Free tier. More on that below.
Download and install on Windows
- Go to claude.com/download.
- Under Desktop, choose Windows or Windows (arm64). Most laptops and desktops are the standard (x64) build; pick arm64 only if you have a Snapdragon-based Windows machine or another Arm PC.
- Run the installer and open Claude.
- Already have the app? Update it before looking for Cowork. Anthropic's article is explicit that Cowork "requires the latest version of Claude for Windows," and an outdated build is the most common reason people don't see the Cowork option.
First-run setup
Sign in with a paid plan. Per the help article, Cowork is "available to paid Claude plans (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise) only." Pricing as of this writing: Pro is $17/month billed annually (about $200 up front) or $20/month billed monthly, and Anthropic's pricing page lists "Includes Claude Cowork" under Pro. Max starts at $100/month and adds 5x or 20x more usage than Pro, not extra features. If you're on Free, the app will run Chat but Cowork won't be available. Find Cowork next to Chat. Chat and Cowork share one home: select Cowork in the message box to hand off a task, and select Chat to go back to a regular conversation.
Choose how Claude checks with you. Cowork has three permission modes you can change from the mode selector in the chat box: Manual (Claude pauses and asks before actions), Auto (Claude keeps working but reviews each action for safety and blocks anything it judges unsafe), and Skip (no pauses, no automatic checks). Anthropic's own advice for "money, messages sent as you, important files" is to stay on Manual. Auto mode also uses more of your usage limit.
How to use it: three tasks for your first hour
Pick tasks that involve real files and a finished deliverable. Here's how that looks for three professions this site covers (our getting-started guide covers Projects and first-task habits):
1. Teacher: a week of lesson plans from your unit outline. Point Cowork at the folder with your unit outline and last year's plans and ask for five differentiated lesson plans in your district's template, saved as separate documents. If you want to see the output shape before installing anything, try the lesson plan generator in the browser, then install the free teacher plugin so Cowork already knows the format.
2. Bookkeeper: month-end reconciliation from exported statements. Drop the bank export and the ledger CSV in a folder and ask Cowork to reconcile them, flag unmatched transactions in a spreadsheet tab, and draft the client email. The reconciliation tool and client email tool show the deliverables; the bookkeeper plugin packages both as skills.
3. Recruiter: a scorecard and outreach batch from a job description. Give Cowork the JD and a folder of resumes and ask for a structured interview scorecard plus personalized outreach drafts for the top five. Preview with the interview scorecard tool, then install the recruiter plugin.

Both ship in the same desktop app download, which is why "Claude Cowork vs Claude Code" is such a common follow-up search.

Rule of thumb: if your work product is a document, spreadsheet, deck, or tidy folder, use Cowork. If it's software, use Claude Code. Web and mobile, if you're away from your PC
Windows isn't the only way in anymore. Per the same help article, Cowork on the web at claude.ai is available on Pro, Max, and Team plans; on mobile it's in the latest Claude for iOS and Android on the same plans; and on Enterprise both are available where an admin has enabled it. Claude Cowork vs Claude Code, which one should I use?+
Cowork if you don't write code. Anthropic says Cowork uses the same agentic architecture as Claude Code with no terminal required: you describe an outcome and it produces documents, spreadsheets, and organized files. Claude Code is the developer version that lives in the terminal and works inside codebases. Both are included in the same desktop app download; pick by whether your work is files and documents or software.
Does Cowork work on the web or mobile?+
Yes. Per Anthropic's guide, Cowork on the web at claude.ai is available on Pro, Max, and Team plans, and on mobile in the latest Claude for iOS and Android on the same plans; Enterprise gets both where an admin enables it.
